Italy: Under 13 Corps. OOB  2nd, 3rd and 66th Inf Bdes. 27 Jan left Italy, came under command GHQ MEF. 2 Feb arrived Palestine came under command HQ

Palestine and Transjordan. Moved to Syria and Lebanon. July moved back to Palestine. Dec moved to Egypt.

 

1946

Egypt - OOB: 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. April moved to Palestine.

 

1947

Palestine – OOB: 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. Jan swapped areas with 6th Airborne Division.

 

1948

Palestine – OOB: 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. April – Palestine (HQ at Sarafand) - OOB: 1st Guards Bde (Haifa), 2nd Inf Bde Group (Jerusalem) and 3rd Inf Bde Group (Sarafand). End of May left Palestine and travelled by land to the Canal Zone. Sept HQ moved to Tripoli, Libya – OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde (Tripoli) and 3 Inf Bde (Suez).

 

1949 - 1950

Libya: HQ at Tripoli - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde (Tripoli) and 3 Inf Bde (Suez).

 

1951

Libya: HQ at Tripoli - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde (Tripoli) and 3 Inf Bde (Suez). Nov HQ moved from Tripoli to Fayid, Ismalia, Canal Zone. Joined by 2 Inf Bde from Cyprus.

 

1952

Egypt: HQ at Fayid, Ismalia, Canal Zone - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde (Tripoli) and 3 Inf Bde (Suez). March as Southern District – OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde, 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. October Ismalia, Canal Zone - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde, 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde.

 

1953 - 1954

Egypt: HQ at Fayid, Ismalia, Canal Zone - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde, 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde.

 

1955

Egypt: HQ at Fayid, Ismalia, Canal Zone - OOB: 1 (Guards) Bde, 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. Nov moved to Winterbourne, England, leaving 1st Guards Brigade at Ismalia and Port Said.

 

1956

England: HQ at Winterbourne, UK – OOB: 2 Inf Bde and 3 Inf Bde. September moved to Bulford.

 

1957 - 1959

England: HQ at Bulford – OOB: 2 Inf Bde.

 

1960

England: HQ at Bulford – OOB: 2 Inf Bde. 1 July 1st Infantry Division disbanded in UK, re-formed in Verden, BAOR as 1 Division by renaming 5 Division. OOB – 7th Armd Bde Group and 12th Inf Bde Group.

 

1961

Germany: HQ at Sheil Bks, Verden, OOB: 7th Armd Bde Group and 12th Inf Bde Group (Jan to 2 Div).  From March controlled 20th Armd Bde Group.

 

1962 - 1963

Germany: HQ at Sheil Bks, Verden, OOB: 7th and 20th Armd Bde Groups.

 

1964

1965

1981

1982 -1989

1990

Germany: HQ at Sheil Bks, Verden: OOB: 7th, 12th and 22nd Armd Bdes. Dec HQ moved to Saudi Arabia with 4th and 7th Armd Bdes. Renamed 1st (British) Armoured Division.

 

1991

1st (British) Armoured Division - Saudi Arabia: OOB: 4th and 7th Armd Bdes. Returned to Germany - OOB: 7th, 12th and 22nd Armd Bdes. Renamed 1st Armoured Division.

 

1992

1st Armoured Division - Germany: HQ at Sheil Bks, Verden: OOB: 7th, 12th and 22nd Armd Bdes. 31 Dec division disbanded; HQ redesignated HQ Lower Saxony District at Verden.

 

1993

1st (UK) Armoured Division - 1 July HQ formed at Wentworth Bks, Herford by redesignation of 4th (UK) Armoured Div (the only remaining armoured division in the Army), OOB: 4th, 7th and 20th Armd Bdes.

 

1994 - 2000

Germany: HQ at Wentworth Bks, Herford – OOB: 4th, 7th and 20th Armd Bdes.

 

2001

Germany: HQ at Wentworth Bks, Herford – OOB: 4th, 7th and 20th Armd Bdes. September on exercise in Oman.

 

2002

Germany: HQ at Wentworth Bks, Herford – OOB: 4th, 7th and 20th Armd Bdes.

 

2003

Germany: HQ at Wentworth Bks, Herford – OOB: 4th, 7th and 20th Armd Bdes. Feb 7 Armd Bde deployed to Persian Gulf. March took part in the invasion of Iraq. 3(UK) Division took over from 1(UK) Division as the British force headquarters in Iraq at 1200 (local) on 11 July. 3(UK) Division has formed the headquarters of the new Multi-National Division (South-East) with UK, Italian, Norwegian, Romanian, Danish, Dutch, Czech, Portuguese, Lithuanian and New Zealand troops coming under its command. The Italian Brigade assumed responsibility for Dhi Qar province at

 

2004 -
